5 Ways to Add Vintage to a Modern Wardrobe

“I love it, but I could never pull that off,” she said.

In college, I worked as a personal shopper/stylist for women 2-3 times my age, and I heard this phrase a lot. Keep in mind, these were grown-up, successful, sassy, Southern women. I was certain there was no piece of clothing bigger than their fabulous personalities. However, I learned that sometimes people need a little encouragement and inspiration when it comes to their clothing choices.

If you love vintage clothes but aren’t sure how to style them with “regular” or modern pieces in your closet, I totally understand. The good news is, combining vintage and modern styles is easier than you might think. Here are some ideas to inspire and encourage you.

5 ways to incorporate vintage clothing into your wardrobe:
1. Start with something interesting but not shocking. If you love the idea of rocking a fully beaded top, but it’s a severe deviation from your usual look, start with items that have more subtle elements of visual interest (like a patterned blouse in a neutral color palette) and then work your way into the more bold/novelty pieces. The goal here is about a style evolution, not revolution. That way you can build your confidence, Start small and then work your way up. Below are a few examples of pieces that are definitely interesting but not shocking or overpowering.

2. Pair novelty vintage with modern basics. Problem number two people often face with clothing (be it vintage or modern) is, “what do I wear with this?” The solution is that most novelty vintage pieces, especially the bold pieces (cue your 80s embellished sweaters), pair nicely with staples you already own, like jeans (skinny, distressed, boot cut, etc.), black pants (faux-leather, joggers or leggings) or a slip dress/skirt.

3. Vintage denim. One easy way to add vintage in your closet is via denim, a closet staple. Whether it’s jeans or jackets , denim works in nearly every season and is incredibly versatile. For jeans, consider a distressed bootcut, high waist black, edgy acid, or a super light wash. You can’t go wrong by adding any of these to your rotation. By swapping for vintage denim staples you’ll wear on a regular basis, you’re not only being more sustainable, but you’re going get more comfortable and confident with vintage style. Lastly, denim isn’t overly loud by nature, because it’s meant to compliment star pieces you pair with them, so this is an easy way to wade into the water.

4. Add a classic vintage piece (Ex: cashmere sweater, coat, brooch) One of the great things about vintage clothes is their timeless style. When you’re just starting to incorporate vintage, consider a piece that has a classic element in its fabric, pattern or function. Examples would be a cashmere sweater, silk scarf, fur or leather coat. These pieces will last you for years because of their high quality makeup and timeless style.

5. Layer vintage with modern. For example, add a vintage blazer over a modern graphic tee, or put a modern cardigan over a vintage camisole. Add vintage gold chains over a modern tee or dress. Throw a vintage sweater on over a modern satin midi skirt.
